My Journey – Ashley's Story
“When I began my weight loss journey in January 2025 with Dr Atalla and BetterLife Surgery team, I weighed 106 kg. Today, I stand at 69 kg, having lost an incredible 50 kg from my heaviest weight. This transformation has been more than just about numbers on a scale – it has completely changed my life.
The impact on my daily life has been profound. I've discovered a new sense of energy and happiness that has allowed me to be the mother I've always wanted to be. I can now actively participate in activities with my children, creating precious memories that were once challenging for me. Simple things like playing in the park or going for family walks have become joyful experiences rather than exhausting tasks.
One of the most rewarding changes has been in how I see myself. I've found a newfound confidence in my appearance, experimenting with fashion choices I never would have considered before. I now enjoy wearing fitted clothes and exploring a vibrant palette of colours, something that brings me joy every day.
Living with PTSD related to my child's medical condition hasn't been easy, but my weight loss journey has positively influenced my mental health. Instead of staying indoors, I now find myself motivated to get outside and embrace life. My mood has improved significantly, and I feel more equipped to handle life's challenges.
Looking back, I can confidently say that having bariatric surgery was the best decision I've ever made. It wasn't just about losing weight – it was about gaining a new lease on life. This journey has transformed not only my physical health but has given me the confidence and energy to live life to its fullest.

My Journey – Bree's Story
“On Saturday, March 9th, 2024, I had gastric sleeve surgery — and it changed my life.
At that time, I weighed 169 kg — the heaviest I had ever been.
I had spent years in pain.
Pain in my body. Pain in my heart. Pain in my confidence.
I knew deep down that something had to change… or I was going to lose myself completely. But this journey didn’t start on the operating table.
It started back in late 2022, after a phone call with BetterLife Surgery, where I was advised to take out private health insurance.
So I did. That call planted a seed. Quietly, I committed to myself: “I’m going to do this.”
By Monday, October 9th, 2023, I had my first surgical consult with Dr. Mo.
He was direct, honest, and supportive. He told me I had to have realistic expectations, and that at 169 kg, this wouldn’t be an easy road. But I made him a promise that day:
“Everything I tell you I’m going to do — I will do it.”And I meant it.
Because I was done living in survival mode.
Done gasping for air after walking 500 metres.
Done sweating just from putting on shoes.
Done being scared I’d fall if I got on the floor with my son.
Done hurting — in my feet, back, body, and soul.---
Why I Did It
I didn’t choose surgery for a number on the scale or a smaller pant size.
I did it because I wanted to live longer and be present for my kids — especially my youngest son, who has autism and needs me healthy, strong, and full of energy.
I wanted to be able to get on the floor without fearing my knees would give out…
To walk without needing to stop…
To shop for clothes without crying in the changeroom…
To fly on a plane without asking for a seatbelt extender. At size 28, everything felt harder. Everything hurt.
So I said: “No more.”

The Lead-Up: The Start of the Shift
After my October appointment, I was booked in for gastric sleeve surgery on March 9th, 2024.
And on that very day — Monday, October 9th, 2023 — I began my pre-op diet.I didn’t wait. I was ready.
My goal was to lose 15 kg before surgery. I reached 11 kg, dropping to 158 kg. I could’ve let that discourage me. But instead, I reminded myself:
“I’ve come this far. I’ve paid for this. I’ve made the decision to remove part of my body. I’m not going to let one number stop me.”---
Surgery & Recovery
Surgery day arrived: Saturday, March 9th, 2024.
Yes, I was nervous. Yes, I was excited. But above all — I was ready.
I knew this wasn’t just surgery. It was a reset of my mind, body, and soul. The first day of recovery was rough — as to be expected. But once the pain was managed, I tapped into my healthcare background. I knew I had to get moving, listen to my body, and focus on hydration.
Going home was especially tough — it was Easter weekend (March 29–April 1, 2024). All my old trigger foods were around me. But I didn’t give in. I stayed focused.
I even stopped watching TV to avoid fast food ads.Instead of giving into cravings, I leaned into awareness. I noticed my triggers. I started to understand why I ate the way I did — and little by little, I took control back.
The 6-week post-op diet was a challenge, but I made it through. Having a dietitian on hand helped more than I could explain — especially when I had no idea what I was supposed to eat, or when.
---
What’s Changed: The Unimaginable Became My Reality
As of July 2025, I’ve lost 91 kg — from 167 kg down to 76 kg.
And I didn’t just lose weight.
I gained back my life.I can breathe easier
I can sit in any chair without fear
I can wrap a towel all the way around myself
I can keep up with my kids
I feel like my body is my home againAnd most importantly:
I’ve kept every promise I made to Dr. Mo and to myself.
I said I wasn’t going to be a statistic — and I meant it.---
What I’m Most Proud Of
That I finally chose me.
For once, I stopped putting everyone else first. I gave myself permission to love my body, to heal my mindset, and to believe in something better.
I didn’t quit — not when it was hard, not when I was tired, and not when the scale slowed down.
I changed my habits. I rewired my thoughts. I refused to go back.---
To Anyone Considering Weight Loss Surgery
This isn’t the easy way out.
It’s the brave way forward. And if you’re considering it, here’s what I want you to know:
Say YES to yourself
Be kind — healing isn’t linear
Change your mindset — that’s the most important part
Do your research and ask every question
Surround yourself with people who lift you up
Trust your team — and trust the processDon’t let fear keep you stuck.
You are worth the effort. You are worth the work. You are worth the life waiting for you.---
I didn’t just lose 91 kg…
I gained freedom.
I gained confidence.
And I gained the strength to never let myself go back to who I used to be.Because now, I look in the mirror and see a woman who never gave up — and never will again.
Thank you Mo to you and your amazing team. You helped every step of the way.”
My Journey – Ellen's Story
“As a 35-year-old nurse, I understand healthcare from both sides of the bed. For years, I watched others transform their lives through bariatric surgery while I remained on the sidelines, contemplating my own journey. Today, six months after my gastric bypass surgery, I stand 40 kg lighter, with a story of transformation that goes far beyond the numbers on the scale.
The decision to undergo bariatric surgery wasn't made lightly. As a healthcare professional, I researched extensively, carefully selected my surgeon, and prepared myself mentally for the journey ahead. Looking back, this life-changing decision has exceeded my expectations in ways I never imagined.
The transformation has been holistic - affecting every aspect of my life. My newfound energy has led me to embrace regular gym sessions, and I've developed a completely new relationship with food. The changes aren't just physical; colleagues and friends have noticed a positive shift in my confidence and overall demeanour. I've discovered a renewed zest for life that radiates through everything I do.
Of course, the journey hasn't been without its challenges. Learning to navigate my new nutritional needs has been a daily learning experience. I'm constantly focusing on meeting protein requirements while ensuring adequate fibre and fluid intake. It's like learning a new language - understanding fresh hunger cues and different physical sensations. But these challenges have made the journey more meaningful, and my recent blood work confirms I'm on the right track.
If I could offer advice to others considering this path, I'd encourage even more preparation. While I did my homework, connecting with long-term gastric bypass patients would have provided valuable insights, particularly about dietary patterns beyond the first year. Their experiences could have better prepared me for the long-term lifestyle changes.
Six months into my journey, I can confidently say that gastric bypass surgery was the right choice for me. The physical, emotional, and lifestyle transformations have been remarkable. While the road continues, I move forward with optimism, armed with new habits, increased energy, and a profound appreciation for this second chance at a healthier life.
This isn't just a weight loss story - it's a testament to the power of making bold decisions for your health and embracing the transformative journey that follows. For anyone contemplating this path, know that with proper preparation, commitment, and support, remarkable change is possible.”
My Journey – Megan's Story
“For so long, I was caught in a painful, exhausting cycle. After the birth of me 2nd child i weighed in at my heaviest, I was 115kgs. I suffered from terrible low self-esteem and was constantly physically exhausted, dragging myself through every day. I tried everything—the endless cycle of diets that didn't work—and every failed attempt left me feeling profoundly disappointed and convinced I was incapable of change.
This is when I made the biggest life-changing decision: to pursue surgery.
One single phone call to Better Life changed everything. I was met with such kindness and received all the information I needed to start my journey, completely without judgement.
My journey officially began with my first appointment with Mo in December 2024. He provided me with the clear information and tools necessary to get me ready for surgery in February 2025.
Now, 10 months after surgery and currently weighing 68kgs, and I can truly say I have got my life back.
The transformation is internal and external:
• Self-Esteem Reclaimed: I finally got my self-esteem back. I look at myself now with respect and confidence.
• Renewed Strength: I am genuinely physically fitter and stronger. I feel energized throughout the day, my pain is significantly decreased, and I am finally enjoying life.Thank you to the entire team at Better Life for your professionalism and care. You gave me the opportunity to succeed where I had before failed. My journey is far from over, but the future is brighter than I could have ever imagined.”
My Journey – Shar's Story
“My weight loss journey began with significant challenges, reaching a peak weight of 128kg. Having struggled with weight issues since my 40s, multiple factors contributed to my weight gain including smoking cessation, a left foot injury, and menopausal changes.
A pivotal moment occurred during a scheduled colonoscopy. Due to my high BMI, I was redirected from the local hospital to tertiary centre due to weight restrictions. The anaesthetist told me " you are too fat for anaeshetic " which left me wide awake for the colonoscopy. Yes wide awake, feeling things move inside me and burning polyps off. It was the most frightening thing I have ever had done. The experience was particularly traumatic as I remained fully conscious during the procedure due to anaesthetic concerns. This confronting experience became my catalyst for change.
Initially considering bariatric surgery in Melbourne, I was guided towards a consultation with Mo and his team through my daughter-in-law's recommendation. Prior to my first appointment, I lost 6kg, determined to demonstrate my commitment to the process.
I had a longstanding reflux and found to have a large hiatus hernia on gastroscopy hence, Dt Atalla recommended Roux-enY gastric bypass which has completely resolved my reflux & constant heartburn symptoms combined with an outstanding weight loss.
The pre-surgical preparation, while demanding, was manageable with the right mindset. My surgery weight was 116kg, and I have since achieved remarkable progress, now weighing less than 75kg. This transformation is also reflected in my clothing size, dropping from size 24 to 12/14.
The night before my surgery, I nearly backed out. I was scared that I would be kept awake during it, scared of the unknown.
The morning of surgery I was ready, a little scared but ready to get this over with. The Roux-en-Y procedure itself went smoothly, despite my pre-operative anxiety. Within 8 hours post-surgery, I was mobile and even helping other patients. The recovery process, while challenging, was aided by my determination and compliance with the team's guidelines.
The journey has involved significant lifestyle modifications. My relationship with food has fundamentally changed - previous favourite foods no longer appeal to me. Exercise, particularly walking, has become an integral part of my daily routine, contributing significantly to my success.
It's important to note that bariatric surgery is not "the easy way out." It requires constant dedication, adherence to medical advice, and a strong support system. The surgical team's ongoing support has been invaluable throughout this process.
Currently, I maintain my progress through regular exercise and mindful eating, focusing on my goal of remaining healthy and fit. This transformation has not just been physical - it has been a complete reshaping of both body and mind, proving to be one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.
This is one of the best things I have ever done, I'm sure if you take the same leap you will agree.
This is not the new you. It's the new shape of you! It will help your body and mind change shape.
Don't join Facebook groups, they will frighten you. If you do, don't take any advice seriously, take it with a grain of salt. The only people you can count on are your WLS team, and yourself. If you can't count on yourself, you're not ready yet.
Exercise is the most important thing you can do. Just walk, you will be surprised at how much energy you get by walking.
Don't believe what other people say either. Some people say it's the easy way out. There is nothing easy about it, it work, it's hard work. But very rewarding work. Remember your WLS team is there for you all the way.”
My Journey – Wayne's Story
“My story is one of persistence and personal growth. After struggling with weight fluctuations for many years, 2025 marked a turning point in my life when I successfully shed almost 58 kg so far. Throughout this journey, I've been fortunate to have the support of Dr Atalla and his team at BetterLife Surgery, who have helped me prove to myself that determination can overcome physical limitations.
I achieved what might seem simple to others - a seated leg cross position. For me, this was a significant milestone, a basic movement that I hadn't been able to do for years. While this achievement might appear modest to some, it represented a crucial step in my mobility journey. However, I had an even bigger challenge in mind: climbing the Telstra tower in Shepparton, a goal that had been lingering in my thoughts for years. In November, I revisited this long-standing ambition, to conquer the tower in 2026. But something changed inside me. On December 11th, inspired by my progress, I decided not to wait. I took the initiative and accomplished this feat on my own.
My transformation has gone far beyond just physical achievements. Through my dedication to fitness, I've developed new habits and continue to set new goals, which has led to improved self-determination and self-acceptance. Starting with basic exercises and progressing to significant challenges, my journey shows that consistent effort and the right support system can lead to remarkable changes.
Today, I continue to break my personal records and set new goals. My experience shows that it's never too late to pursue long-held dreams. As I walked past that tower that day, I remembered Yoda's words: "Do or do not, there is no try." Those words finally prompted me to push beyond my comfort zone and achieve what once seemed impossible to me.”
My Journey – Danielle’s Story
“I have spent most of my life overweight, always looking for the next diet, you name it i tried it. Meal plans, Jenny Craig, weight watches, shakes, contrave. I would loose weight then put it back on plus more.
I was unhappy, frustrated and my self esteem was extremely low.
Whenever we went on holidays , my husband and kids would be in the pool having fun and I’d sit out and watch.
My 7 year old asked me one day why I don’t get in the pool with them. Then it hit me, I’m missing out on so much.
I found out about Mo through a friend. I called the office and spoke to Marianne on the phone, she was so lovely, and welcoming.
I had my first appointment in may 2023. Mo was very informative, non judgemental and you could tell he genuinely cares.
I had gastric sleeve in December 2023, i had a smooth recovery and the aftercare provided by Mo and his team was amazing.
I was incredibly lucky to have abdominalplasty with Mo in July 2025.
The day I walked into MO’s office in may 2023 I was 92.7kg and today I’m 65kg.
I’m happy, healthy, I go swimming, I am no longer hiding under oversized t shirts and for the first time in my life I am not on a diet!
I’m extremely grateful for this journey and can’t thank Mo enough.”
My Journey – Tamara's Story
“When I started my journey, I weighed 112kgs, I had spent the past 4 years following the birth of my son trying to improve my weight and health with constant fail. I was experiencing multiple obesity related health issues from being at risk of diabetes, fatty liver disease all the way to a condition affecting my eye sight. On top of this I struggled with any physical activity and struggled to play with my kids and my self-esteem was at its lowest point.
When I first met Dr Atalla and his team in January 2024 I was met with friendly, non-judgemental responses and conversations and instantly felt reassured I was in the best hands.
I had my surgery in June 2024 and the ongoing support from the better life surgery team has been more than I have expected and I am beyond grateful.
I am now weighing at 59kgs 14 months post op which is a 53kg weight loss.
I have never felt healthier, fitter and confident. I run and play sports with my kids and feel like I am not hiding and am finally living life to the fullest.
I cannot thank Dr Atalla and the whole team at better life surgery enough.”
My Journey – Holly’s Story
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with being overweight. I tried countless diet programs, medications, and other methods, but nothing seemed to work. My weight constantly fluctuated—up and down—leaving me feeling defeated and frustrated.
In 2019, after the birth of my third child, I reached my heaviest weight of 140kg. The physical and emotional toll was overwhelming. I knew something had to change, but I didn’t know where to begin.
In 2021, I took a brave step and sought a referral to Mo, a specialist who could help me explore my options. After careful consideration, we decided on gastric sleeve surgery. In November 2021, I had the procedure, starting at 137kg.
The first six weeks after surgery felt like an eternity. I had to adjust to the physical restrictions of my new stomach, learn to prioritize fluid and protein intake, and tackle the lifelong mental battles I’d had with food. But slowly, I began to feel stronger. I could walk 5–10km a day without losing my breath. Over the next 12 months, I lost 53kg, bringing me down to 84kg. I felt lighter, healthier, and more energetic. For the first time in years, I felt in control—of my body and my life.
But my journey wasn’t without its challenges.
Six months post-op, I needed to have my gallbladder removed, which set me back another six weeks for recovery. I got back on track, but the day before my one-year surgery anniversary, everything changed. I was rushed to the hospital in excruciating pain. I had no idea what was happening.
I was diagnosed with a celiac artery dissection, caused by a rare congenital condition called Celiac Artery Compression Syndrome. My artery trunk was positioned lower than normal, and the median arcuate ligament was compressing the artery. This led to ongoing pain, inability to eat, and frequent vomiting.
The next 16 months were incredibly difficult. I made countless trips to the hospital. Through it all, Mo never gave up on me. He researched tirelessly, presented my case at international conferences, consulted with colleagues both in Australia and overseas, and built a team of exceptional surgeons. Finally, in April 2024, I underwent surgery to release the ligament and stop the compression.
The surgery was a success.
Now, 12 months later, I can eat without pain or nausea. I still occasionally feel a slight pinching in my back, but I haven’t had a single hospital visit since. I’m beyond grateful to Mo and his incredible team for their care, support, and dedication. They were there every step of the way.
There was an unexpected detour in my weight loss journey, but I’m finally back on track. I’m becoming a healthier, happier version of myself—not just for me, but for my three energetic boys and my biggest supporter, my husband.
Thank you.

My Journey – Jess’s Story
“It has been eight months since my gastric sleeve surgery, and I’ve shed 44.4kg—not just in weight, but in the heavy burden I carried both physically and emotionally. My goal was never defined by a number on the scale, but by a feeling of contentment—and I’m proud to say I’ve reached that milestone.
THE TWO VERSIONS OF ME
Pre-op Jess was constantly fatigued and battling chronic inflammatory pain, PCOS flare-ups, perimenopause, hormonal imbalances, borderline diabetes, cortisol spikes, insomnia, heightened asthma symptoms, and depression. Every day felt like a grind, and I was running on empty.Post-op Jess is a radiant light—joyful, strong, confident, and full of life. I’ve rediscovered a deep sense of self-worth and energy. I’m finally able to wear treasured pieces from my vintage clothing collection again. The reflection I now see in the mirror is of someone vibrant, unique, and happy-go-lucky—someone who shows up for herself every single day. My passion for the outdoors, martial arts, and hiking has returned. I feel fit, fabulous, and free.
THE PATH TO CHANGE
This life-changing decision didn’t come overnight. It followed two years of deep research, trial and error with alternative treatments, and confronting my relationship with food. I came to accept that in my case, the benefits of surgery far outweighed the risks. The unwavering support of my family and close friends helped guide me to one clear destination: Betterlife Surgery and Dr. Mo Atalla.Dr. Mo is nothing short of a godsend, and the entire Betterlife team—Marianne, Janet, and Bec—are simply phenomenal. From my very first consultation to every step along the way, my experience has been flawless. The care was not only informative but truly first-class. I cannot thank them enough for their kindness, encouragement, and professionalism.
RECOVERY & BEYOND
My recovery was smooth and by the book. Thanks to the comprehensive guidance I received beforehand, I transitioned through the dietary stages with minimal discomfort, focusing on healing and adjusting to my new lifestyle. I have no regrets. I speak openly and honestly with anyone who asks about the surgery, sharing my experience with full transparency.Even now, I continue to receive dedicated and personalized care. Mo is just a phone call away, and knowing he remains so invested in my journey gives me great peace of mind.
This isn’t just a transformation—it’s a rebirth. And I’m loving every moment of this new chapter.
—Jess”
DESANKA
“Having struggled with hypothyroidism, PCOS, and irregular menstrual cycles, I found myself gaining significant weight.
As a child, I was always on the fuller side and faced bullying because of my weight. Over time, a series of life events, including a stressful divorce and becoming a single mother, led me to emotionally eat. I was never satisfied with my appearance and tried countless solutions – from being active and eating less, to going fully vegan, and experimenting with various diets – all to no avail.
The weight began to take a toll on both my physical and mental health. In search of a solution, I researched bariatric gastric sleeve surgery. What truly convinced me was seeing my cousin’s incredible transformation after undergoing the same surgery. I was inspired and decided this might be the right path for me.
Further research showed that the surgery could help reduce the effects of PCOS, promote rapid weight loss, and balance my hormones.
I originally had an appointment with another bariatric surgeon, but after reading about Better Life Surgery online, I felt a strong connection to their team. I called and spoke with Maryanne, whose supportive, attentive, and non-judgmental attitude made me feel comfortable. It was then I decided to switch and make an appointment with Better Life Surgery.
From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed warmly by Dr. Mo Atalla, Maryanne, and the dietitian, Janet. I didn’t feel like just another patient; I felt listened to and supported. Dr. Atalla truly understood my needs and helped me make an informed decision about the surgery.
After discussing with my partner and family, including my daughter, I made the decision to go ahead with the surgery and paid to move forward.
Motivated and determined, I followed the pre-surgery plan with Optifast shakes and a vegetable stew that Janet had guided me on, and I lost 6kg in the first two weeks.
Just before the surgery, I had doubts and almost backed out. I called my cousin, who reassured me, and I reminded myself of the reasons I had chosen this path. When I arrived at the hospital, I was nervous, but Dr. Atalla’s calm and reassuring presence helped me stay focused and grounded in my decision.
The surgery went smoothly, and I woke up to see Dr. Atalla checking in on me, which reassured me further. Recovery was smooth, and I focused on the process of learning and adapting to my new life.
Whenever I felt overwhelmed or frustrated, I took a step back to remind myself of the reasons behind my decision. Nearly a year later, my weight has dropped dramatically, and I’ve noticed significant changes, both emotionally and physically. I’ve received compliments from others and feel more confident in myself. I’ve even started wearing lighter clothes, just as I promised Dr. Atalla I would.
I’ve also pursued a small coaching course to become a coach/counselor, hoping to help others navigate their health journeys and consider surgeries like this one.
I’m blessed to have a loving fiancé who has supported me through every stage, from my heaviest to now. Most importantly, I am happy with the person I’ve become. My menstrual cycles are now mostly regular, and I feel more in control of my health.
My advice for anyone considering this surgery is to be mentally prepared and resilient. Eating smaller meals can sometimes be challenging, and I occasionally experience discomfort, but it’s all part of the learning process.
I will forever be grateful to Dr. Atalla, Marianne, and the entire team at Better Life Surgery for their guidance, support, and care.
With gratitude,
Desanka Ogrizovic”

“I tried so many diets over the years—Weight Watchers, yo-yo diets, the soup diet—you name it. But nothing ever worked. I became so depressed and disheartened by the constant failure that I would quickly fall off track, only to gain more weight. Eventually, I reached a point in my life where my health was deteriorating. With diabetes running through both sides of my family, I knew I had to take action.
I also have rheumatoid arthritis, and carrying all that extra weight caused constant pain in my bones. Working long hours only added to my exhaustion. I didn’t have the energy to do anything or go anywhere. And when I did go out, I would feel so down, constantly worrying about what I could wear. I could never just walk into a store and buy something off the shelf. I always had to head straight for the 22-24 size section, and even then, nothing ever felt flattering.
That’s when I made the decision to take a leap of faith and trust you, Dr. Atalla, to help me change my life. The gastric sleeve surgery was my chance for a new beginning—a fresh start I had been longing for for so many years.
After the surgery, I watched as the weight started to fall off. It wasn’t easy, though. I had to work hard, constantly being mindful of what I ate and drank. But slowly, I began to enjoy life again. I could finally stand in front of the camera instead of always hiding behind it. The smile on my face from ear to ear is a reflection of how happy I am and how far I’ve come.
Your program has been instrumental in helping me make better decisions. Whenever I notice a few extra kilograms creeping back on, I know I can reach out for support. Starting a new training regime was a big step for me, something I’ve never done before, but I’m excited to take it on.
I have so many adventures lined up in the next couple of years, and I finally feel healthy, happy, and ready to tackle them without feeling tired, unhealthy, or unable to keep up. I know now that I can achieve everything I set my mind to. And, most importantly, I know I have many more years ahead of me to live fully.”

“It’s now been a year since my surgery, and after visiting Dr. Mo, Marianne, and Rebecca East for my one-year anniversary checkup, I can’t believe the transformation. As you can see from my before-and-after photos, my life, my relationships, and my attitude have changed dramatically.
The comfort I feel now—both physically and emotionally—is incredible. Not only has the pain in my joints decreased and my mobility increased, but even little things like sitting comfortably on public transport next to my wonderful, supportive husband have become so much easier. Attending footy games (Go Blues!) is now a pleasure instead of a challenge. It’s the small things, like being able to enjoy life without constantly worrying about my size, that a "normal" sized person takes for granted.
Dr. Mo has been my savior. It may sound dramatic, but it’s the truth. The weight loss surgery has truly given me my life back. While any other bariatric surgeon could have performed the surgery, none would have provided the level of support and care that Dr. Mo and his team have.
I’ve now lost 38.25 kg and gone from a size 22 to a size 12/14. For reference, I’m 67 years young and feeling younger with each passing day.
To anyone sitting on the fence about surgery, I encourage you to take the leap. As Nike says, "Just Do It." You won't find a better surgeon or support team to guide you through this journey.
Once again, thank you to Dr. Mo, Marianne, Bec, Janet, and the entire team for everything you’ve done for me and my husband.”
Lina
“Mo Atalla Changed My Life
When I first visited Mo, referred by my GP, I weighed over 160kg and struggled with BPD, PTSD, manic depression, and severe anxiety. My weight was a result of years of trauma. Over the years, I had tried numerous methods to lose weight and improve my health, but Mo felt like my last chance.
During our first appointment, after a deep and emotional conversation, Mo made the decision to turn me away. He encouraged me to return only after I had taken time to reflect on what I truly wanted from the surgery I was asking for. In the six weeks that followed, I came to realize I had been seeking weight loss surgery (WLS) for all the wrong reasons. I decided to focus on my mental health and set achievable goals to work on before our next meeting.
When I returned, Mo could see the changes in my mindset that he needed to see to guide me on the path toward the lifestyle change I so desperately needed.
Because of my weight, I underwent a three-week pre-op program before the surgery. Mo and I had in-depth discussions to determine which type of WLS would be best for me, and ultimately, he performed a Gastric Sleeve.
Now, 12 months post-op, I’ve lost a total of 62.3kg. There have certainly been challenges, and my relationship with food has had its ups and downs, but the unwavering support from the entire BetterLife team has been incredible. Mo, along with Maryann, Bec, and Janet, have been there for me every step of the way.
Though I still have some way to go on my journey, I know I have a team of champions supporting me until the very end.
If you're on the fence, I wholeheartedly encourage you to book a consultation with Mo. It will be the start of the most transformative and rewarding moments of your life.”

“My Journey with BetterLife Surgery
I began my journey with BetterLife Surgery in March 2024. From coordinating appointments and managing documentation, Marianne has been a wonderful support throughout the process. Mo is a personable, knowledgeable, and highly skilled bariatric surgeon who has been there for me every step of the way, both before and after surgery. Bec, the nurse practitioner, and Janet, the dietitian, complete the incredible team. Together, they work seamlessly to support bariatric patients and help them achieve the best possible outcomes.
So far, my journey has transformed me from a fatigued, 137.5kg woman into a 97.5kg woman who is loving life. It has been a slow and steady process, but I am confident I will reach my goal of losing another 17.5kg. I’m no longer focused on how long it takes—I'm too busy enjoying the best life I can.
Thank you, Mo and the entire team, for giving me this life-changing opportunity and for supporting me throughout my weight loss surgery journey. You've truly given me my life back.”

“What can I say? The entire team at BetterLife Surgery is incredible. They are supportive, caring, and incredibly informative. Mo is unlike any surgeon I’ve ever met—he genuinely cares about his patients and is committed to achieving the best possible results for them.
Mo has gone above and beyond to help me reach my goals. Since starting with BetterLife, I’ve lost over 50kg, and while I still have a bit more to go, I’m so proud of how far I’ve come. Without the unwavering support and encouragement from Mo and his team, I wouldn't have been able to achieve this.
The most beautiful part of my journey has been falling pregnant—something that would never have been possible had I continued my previous lifestyle. My beautiful daughter is now 8 months old and thriving, and I love taking her to see Mo and the team at my follow-up appointments. I will be forever grateful for everything they’ve done for me.
If you're looking for a team that takes a holistic approach, BetterLife Surgery is the way to go. I’ve loved sharing my journey with the entire team, and I look forward to continuing to do so for many years to come.
I am happier, healthier, and love life more than I ever have before.
Thank you, Mo, Marianne, and the entire team. I am forever grateful for everything you’ve done and continue to do!”

“Dr. Mo literally saved my life. The way I was heading, I would’ve been dead within a few years. Since he helped me lose 65kg, my mobility has improved more than I ever thought possible. I’ve stopped taking many of my medications, and my diabetes is now in remission. I no longer need to rely on a podiatrist to cut my toenails, and I don’t use a walking stick to get out of my recliner anymore.
I can even run again, for a little while, and work long shifts without getting tired. I’m pretty sure my sleep apnea is nearly gone—I just need to rest to confirm that. Overall, I feel amazing—probably the best I’ve ever felt in my entire life.
I can’t thank Dr. Mo enough for the care he’s shown me. If you’ve struggled with weight loss for a long time, do yourself a favor: get Gold Cover private health insurance, wait the 12 months, and get the surgery. You won’t regret it once you’ve healed. Talk to others about their experiences and spend those 12 months preparing your mindset.
Good luck on your journeys, everyone! Xx”

“After researching ways to reverse my diabetes, which no medication could help, I decided to pursue RNY Bariatric Surgery. That’s when I came across BetterLife Surgery. Meeting Mo was the moment I knew my life was about to change for the better. Mo and his team offer all the support you could possibly need when embarking on such a life-changing journey, which can feel uncertain and even a bit frightening at times.
Five months later, I’m incredibly grateful that I took the plunge. My surgery did involve some risks, but Mo addressed them quickly and professionally. I felt completely safe under the care I received during both the primary surgery and the subsequent procedures.
Looking back, I would do it all over again and take the risks, knowing how amazing I feel now. I’m no longer on any medication, and the weight loss has given me a completely new perspective on myself and my life. What stands out to me is this: age is just a state of mind—I’m nearing 60, and I feel better than ever.
If you’re unsure about this, don’t be. You really will feel incredible, especially after enduring years of struggles like weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, or whatever other health challenges you’ve faced. This surgery is simply the first step toward achieving better overall health.
I also want to mention Marianne—she truly is the glue that holds the entire process together, offering incredible support every step of the way.
Making this decision was the best choice I’ve ever made. Thank you to the entire team—I will be forever grateful!”

“It’s almost been three years since my Gastric Sleeve surgery, and Mo and the team continue to inspire me every time I visit. So much has changed in every aspect of my life.
Yes, the goal was to lose weight, but more importantly, I was given the tools to make this journey a success. There’s so much more to this process than just shedding the pounds.
There have been many changes I didn’t anticipate. The tools provided me with more than just physical transformation—they’ve helped me mentally navigate all the changes I needed to make. From how I eat to the clothes I wear, to my physical appearance and activities, everything has shifted.
I used to hate going clothes shopping, going to the gym, being around people I didn’t know, and I despised having my photo taken. I was the person who would sit in the back row, staying in the shadows.
Today, I love going to the gym, shopping, and having the energy to play with my grandchildren. But most of all, I now walk into a room full of strangers with so much more confidence.
A huge thanks to Mo and the entire team for helping me transform my life.”

“I had the privilege of being under the care of Dr. Atalla, who provided exceptional treatment for my Crohn’s disease and the complications resulting from a previous partial stomach removal following bariatric surgery at another center. Dr. Atalla’s approach was thorough, and he kept me informed and supported throughout every stage of the process.
Despite the numerous challenges my body presented—including a full stomach removal, gallbladder removal, bowel twisting, herniations, and ruptures—Dr. Atalla consistently offered solutions that allowed me to live a healthier, more fulfilling life. His expertise, combined with his caring and supportive nature, made a world of difference during the nearly three years we worked together, especially in supporting not only me but my family through these difficult times.
Thanks to Dr. Atalla’s care, I’m now able to enjoy a broader variety of foods than I have in over 20 years. Additionally, I’ve lost 50 kg, and both my physical and mental health have improved far beyond what I ever thought was possible.
If you are considering any of the specialist services Dr. Atalla offers, I wholeheartedly recommend placing your trust in him. His dedication and expertise have truly transformed my life for the better.”
